Thefirst toothbrushes featured bristles made from hog hair and was developed in China in 1489. Later toothbrushes had horse and badger hair. DuPont introduced nylon bristles in 1938.

Most toothpastes contain SLS, a foaming detergent that manufacturers add because it makes their users feel like the toothpaste is getting their teeth sparkly and clean. The agent actually does not do much of anything except make orange juice taste bad. The SLS affects the taste buds on the tongue by suppressing their sensitivity to sweet and enhancing their sensitivity to bitter and sour tastes.

We feel strongly that our patients deserve the best possible dental care we can provide. In an effort to maintain a high quality of care, we would like to share some facts with you regarding your dental insurance.

*You may receive a letter from your insurance company stating that dental fees are higher than usual and customeary . An insurance compay surveys a geographic area, finds the average fee and takes 90% of that fee and considers it customary. Included in the fee survey are discount clinics which bring down the average. Any doctor in private practice will have fees that are considered higher than average.

*Dental insurance is not meant to be a PAY-ALL; it is only meant to be an aid.

*Many plans say their insured will be covered “up to 80% or up to 100%” but they do not clearly specify plan fee schedule allowance, annual maximum, or limitations.

*It has been the experience of many dentists that some insurance companies tell their insured that “fees are above the usual and customary fees” rather than saying “our benefits are low”.

*Many routine dental services are NOT covered by insurance.

*You are not required legally to submit predeterminations to your insurance carrier. This only serves to delay treatment and gives your dental insurance company a chance to deny needed treatment. Please do not allow an insurance carrier to dictate what is right for you.

This is information from the Chicago Dental Society

IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY.
Starting at birth, you can begin wiping your baby’s gums with moistened gauze. Once a child’s diet inclludes anything but breast milk or formula., you need to start brushing their teeth or cleaning their mouth twice a day to remove sugars and bits of food.

PICK THE RIGHT TOOL
Before a baby has teeth, you can use cotton gauze moistened with water to clean the mouth; once teeth appear a soft infant toothbrush is anideal choice.

SEE THE DENTIST WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR
Dentists recommend parents take their baby to the dentist within six months of cutting their first tooth to catch any early tooth decay or other oral problems.

AVOID SUGARS
Caring for primary teeth is just as important as permanent teeth. That said, managing a low-sugar intake for your baby ic crucial. For example, fruit juices, which are high in sugar and can cause tooth decay, should be limited or even eliminated from your child’s diet. A better choice is to eat the actual fruit.

TAKE CARE IF TEETH AT NIGHTIME
Once babies have their first tooth, it’s important to brush at least twice daily, including once before bedtime. Letting a baby fall asleep sucking on a bottle can result in early tooth decay, known as “baby bottle tooth decay.” If your baby uses a pacifier, always use a clean one – never give a baby one that has been dipped in sugar or honey.

Dr. Schubert again made a trip to Baudin, Haiti in January to provide volunteer dentistry. A group of 8 volunteers accompanied Dr. Schubert including his wife, Laura, sister Nancy, sister-in-law, Linda, patients Sam and Kathy Cindrich. These volunteers are greatly appreciated. Without their help these mission trips would not be possible. They give of their time, talents and also pay their own expenses …what a gift!

During the 8 day trip there were 5 days devoted to clinical care. 154 patients were seen, 57 cleanings and 651 teeth extracted. People from all 7 of the chapels in the parish were seen.

The next trip is scheduled for April 27th – May 5, 2012 and are looking for people to go with the group. If you are interested or want more information, contact Dr. Schubert at skydoc17@ameritech.net. It is a wonderful experience!

Our group is 9 people, all except one who have been on previous trips.
In addition to providing dental care to our community, we will be visiting a dental office in Port-au-Prince. The Haitian dentist there has assisted us in our clinic on several trips. We will be installing some equipment and bringing supplies to help him will his office.
We also will be setting up a meeting to visit the dental school in Port-Au-Prince and hopefully set up a mentoring/intern program for the dental students.
